Items for Prayer w/c 4th September 2016

World – Thank God after China vote to sign up to the ‘Paris Agreement’ on climate change and pray as the and the US both jointly look to implementing changes that will reduce carbon emissions in both countries. After a bomb killed 14 people in the Philippines pray for the victims families and friends and also for law enforcement agencies and the military in the country as they take a firm stance against militant group Abu Sayyaf after they claimed responsibility for the attacks. Pray for those in Florida who have been affected by the devastating hurricane that has caused destruction in its wake and for the clean up afterwards. As the Paralympic Games begins in Rio his week pray for all the athletes who will be attending and for this to be a great world spectacle that promotes those with disabilities around the world.

UK – After the summer recess and as we approach party conference season pray for our government and for opposition parties. Pray particularly for the Labour party as they go through a lengthy leadership battle and for the right winner to create a strong opposition in parliament. Pray for Scotland as the SNP again promote independence and for focus to be given to the economy and education in the country. Pray for junior doctors as further strikes are planned after the imposition of contracts. As the NHS looks to cut services and save money pray for controversial plans to withhold surgery for obese patients and for this proposal to be properly thought through and the implications this may have on people’s lives.

Church and Community – As the Archbishops’ Secretary for Appointments, Caroline Boddington, and the Prime Minister’s Secretary for Appointments, Edward Chaplin visit the Diocese this Thursday prayer for them and all those who meet with them as they think about who should be the next Bishop of Sheffield. Pray for our local schools as pupils and staff return this week after the summer break. Pray for new classes and teachers that they will settle in quickly and particularly think about those who are attending a new school, either as they move up to secondary school or as they move into a new area. Pray for our church activities as groups begin again after the summer holidays and particularly this week for our Tots group and for parents, carers and children as they attend this welcoming and friendly group.

Sick and Bereaved – Pray for all those known to us who are unwell at this time. Pray for all those who have been bereaved this week that they will know God’s love and tenderness at this difficult time.
